My gosh, it is just amazing the amount of information that people take in on a daily basis. Why not stop and take a look at your own life and consider all the information that is coming at you from all directions as you go through your daily routine. If you are in your car you might turn on the radio, and there are advertisements, and special news bulletins. If you carry a smart phone, there is a deluge of data coming at you constantly.
Perhaps you stop and read the newspaper for a coffee break, or before you go to work in the morning, and then when you come home in the evening you check your e-mails, watch a little TV, and surf the Internet news. Now then, much of this abundance of information is very repetitious, and if you want to conserve time, you’re going to have to cut some of that out. Perhaps this is why the print news media is having a tough time competing with electronic media.
Have you ever read the newspaper and thought to yourself I already knew about that yesterday. Yes, yes you did, but the newspapers are only printed once per day, and when you read the newspaper today, it was news about the prior day. Now you are already a day and a half in advance. Therefore, maybe you should stop reading the newspaper.
Of course the same thing happens with the TV, you watch a story on the evening news, but you’ve already been talking about it in the office, perhaps at Starbucks, and even made a joke about it in the line at the grocery store because everyone has instant information on their smart phones.
Recently, there was a great article on Expert Access – Ideas, Insight, and Inspiration for Business Online News which was titled; What You Can Do About Information Overload” by Jonathan Spira and published on June 21, 2011.
That article talked about a new book, and perhaps you watched the segment on C-SPAN Book Review about “Overload! How Too Much Information Is Hazardous to Your Organization” – And, while we are on this topic, time management not only has to do with organizations who wish to streamline their work processes, but also to individuals who need to cut out some of this information overload, so they have more time to enjoy their own lives, rather than living the life of the whole world, and being affected by all that noise outside of their daily lives, which they have allowed to bring in their personal world.
